The top four finishers of last month’s Mac Diamida Stakes (gr. IIT), including the winner, Prince Will I Am, return to face each other in the $150,000 Pan American Stakes (gr. IIIT) March 26 at Gulfstream Park.
The 1 1/2-mile Pan American drew a field of seven older turf horses, none of them any hotter than 4-year-old Prince Will I Am. The son of Victory Gallop has won four of his last five starts dating back to September, including the Jamaica Handicap (gr. IT), W. L. McKnight Handicap (gr. IIT), and the Mac Diarmida, which he won by three-quarters of a length.
Owned by Casa Farms I, Prince Will I Am suffered his only setback in those last five starts when he ran second in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon (gr. III) in November, only to be disqualified to 10th for interference.
John Velazquez will have the mount for Michelle Nihei. Prince Will I Am will carry top weight of 123 pounds.
Runner-up in the Mac Diarmida was Rahy's Attorney. A veteran of 36 starts and earnings of more than $1.8 million, 7-year-old Rahy’s Attorney is a four-time graded stakes winner. He last won in October 2010 when taking the restricted Bunty Lawless Stakes for the third time at Woodbine. Emma-Jayne Wilson will ride for Ian Black.
Also back from the Mac Diarmida is 9-year-old Musketier, who was beaten only 1 1/4 lengths, and Pool Play, who was only two lengths back.
