Jaycito Scratched From SA Derby

The Zayat Stables runner has a right front foot bruise.

Zayat Stables’ Jaycitowho has been battling a right front foot bruise for several days, was scratched from the April 9 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) the day before the race in Southern California.

“I’ve been fighting the foot problem all week,” said Jaycito's Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. “I was thinking of scratching him on entries day, but changed his shoes and it got him sound. Mr. Zayat was on his way out and I held him off until Friday when I’d know more. I thought we’d be OK, but it got very irritated, and I don’t want to run him in a bar shoe.

“He schooled really well (April 7), and I took him to the track this morning, and when he came back the foot was still bugging him. I just don’t want to do anything to aggravate it any more. It needs to toughen up. The blacksmith said he could still run, but Mr. Zayat said to go by my gut feeling, and I don’t feel comfortable running him.

"I can’t get him ready for the (April 16) Blue Grass (gr. I), so we’ll shoot for the Lexington Stakes (gr. II) the following week (April 23).”

Jaycito inherited the role as Santa Anita Derby favorite after Premier Pegasus was scratched with an injury April 7. Premier Pegasus and Jaycito finished one-two, respectively, in the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) in March. El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) winner.

With the scratch of Jaycito, nine 3-year-olds are now scheduled to run. The Steve Asmussen-trained Silver Medallion is now the 5-2 morning line favorite.

The complete Derby morning line, in post position order, is as follows:  Offlee Wild Boys, 30-1;Indian Winter, 8-1; Mr. Commons, 4-1; Silver Medallion, 5-2; Comma to the Top, 7-2; Midnight Interlude, 20-1; Quail Hill, 30-1; Premier Pegasus, scratched; Anthony's Cross , 3-1;Bench Points, 8-1; Jaycito, scratched.
