Star Billing Earns Senorita Stakes Marquee

George Krikorian's homebred upsets Cambina at Hollywood Park in her second start.

Making just her second start, Star Billing lived up to her name by dusting her rivals in the $100,000 Senorita Stakes (gr. III) by 2 3/4 lengths on the Hollywood Park turf May 7 (VIDEO).

Movie theater mogul George Krikorian's homebred daughter of Dynaformer, sent off at odds of 8-1, seized the lead for Chantal Sutherland rounding the final bend and drove clear in the stretch to upset 4-5 choice Cambina in the one-mile event for 3-year-old fillies. She clocked an excellent time of 1:34.52 over firm going.

Entrustment, a 42-1 shot ridden by Kayla Stra, outfought the Irish-bred Cambina for second by a neck. Cambina, winner of the Providencia Stakes (gar. IIT) at Santa Anita in her last start April 9, was seeking her fourth consecutive win as the 4-5 choice in the field of seven.

Trained by by John Shirreffs, Star Billing won her debut over maidens by 2 1/2 lengths on Santa Anita's hillside turf course March 18 in her only previous race. The bay filly is out of the Thunder Gulch mare Topliner.

Sent off as the third choice, Star Billing carried 115 pounds and paid $19.20, $8.20 and $3.60 while topping a $396.60 exacta. Entrustment, making her graded stakes debut for trainer Paddy Gallagher, returned $29.60 and $9. The Irish-bred filly Cambina, the 121-pound high weight ridden for the first time by Brice Blanc, chased the field into the final turn and lacked the needed kick while paying $2.10 to show.

Wave of Applause, who led to the quarter pole while carving fractions of :23.41, :47.09 and 1:11.12, finished fourth. Justenufappeal, Hard to Resist and Fifth Ave followed. Great Hot was scratched.
