A colt and a filly each breezed a furlong in :10, the fastest times of the Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training under-tack preview. Most of the 91 horses that previewed on the Fairplex Park track May 13 breezed an eighth-mile, while a few worked a quarter or three-eighths and others turned in gallops.
A total of 123 are cataloged in the Barretts May sale, including 15 in a supplemental catalog. The sale will be held at the Hinds Pavilion at Fairplex Park May 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Callaway Thoroughbreds previewed a son of Congrats —White Ruffle, by Vigors, in :10. The youngster, Hip #67, is the only offspring of Congrats in the sale. The :10 filly, consigned as Hip #77 by Stephens Thoroughbreds as agent, is the sole Speightstown in the catalog. She is out of the Unbridled mare Bridled.
“The track was consistent all day long,” said Kim Lloyd, Barretts’ vice president of sales. The sales company divided the preview into three sections with two breaks for track renovation.
Ten 2-year-olds clocked a furlong in :10 1/5 at the preview, including four who posted that time as interior fractions in longer works. Two of those came from Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables’ consignment, each breezing a quarter-mile in :21 2/5, the fastest of 10 at that distance. The first of those, Hip #21, is a son of Corinthian —Menifeeque, by Menifee, while the second, Hip #55, is a son of Hard Spun —Sweet Minister, by The Prime Minister.
The other two traveled :10 1/5 en route to works of three furlongs. Hip #28, also from the Wavertree consignment, worked in :10 1/5, :21 3/5, and :35 1/5. The filly is by Rockport Harbor—One Bright Light, by Silver Deputy. The other, Hip #14 from the Venture Thoroughbreds consignment, worked in :10 1/5, :21 3/5, and :34 3/5, the fastest three furlongs of the preview. He is a son of Stevie Wonderboy—Marquise Miss, by Marquetry.
