Embur's Song stalked a hot pace, took over approaching the eighth pole, and glided to her second straight graded stakes victory May 14 in the $188,394 Hendrie (Can-III) (VIDEO) at Woodbine.
The 4-year-old Unbridled's Song
filly scored by 3 1/2 lengths over favored Ariana D
, completing 6 1/2 furlongs on the Polytrack in a sparkling 1:15.01 under Patrick Husbands. The time was just three-fifths of a second off of the track record set by Fatal Bullet
in 2008 (1:14.54).
Owned by Fares Farm and trained by Todd Pletcher, Embur’s Song entered the Hendrie off of a track-record win in the April 22 Doubledogdare (gr. III) over 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland, her first victory in three starts in 2011. As a 3-year-old she was second in the Bison City Stakes and third in the Woodbine Oaks as the heavy favorite in both.
The winner was bred in Ontario by Josham Farms and is out of the Bold Ruckus mare Embur Sunshine.
The race set up perfectly for Embur’s Song, as she tracked Wildcat Marie
and Dr. Zic
through a quick :22.29 opening quarter-mile. Wildcat Marie and Tyler Pizarro eventually took over, ran a half-mile in a sizzling :44.87, and had the lead at the top of the lane.
But the hot pace caught up with the pacesetter, and Embur’s Song easily ran her down before they reached mid-stretch. She won going away, with Ariana D rallying under Omar Moreno to finish 3 1/4 lengths ahead of third-place Wildcat Marie.
“In looking at the form I noticed she was a speed horse,” said Husbands, who was aboard the bay filly for the first time. “But I asked Todd if she had to be on the lead and he said he thinks so but he wasn’t sure. As she left the gate she was relaxed and the (early pace) set it up for me. I just cruised from there. It takes a good horse to run that fast.”
Embur’s Song improved to 4-1-1 from eight starts and earnings of $374,658. The victory was worth $123,876.
She paid $7.50, $4, and $2.80. The exacta (2-6) returned $29.60 and the trifecta (2-6-3) was worth $82.
Indian Apple Is ran fourth, followed by Hooh Why, Dr. Zic and Shukriya.
