Race-Day Medication Summit at Belmont Park

The first summit on race-day medication will be June 13-14 at Belmont Park.

Belmont Park is the location of the first international summit on race-day medication use as it relates to exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhaging.

The event, to be held June 13-14, is jointly sponsored by the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, and the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium.

The first day of the “International Summit on Race Day Medication, EIPH, and the Racehorse” will be open to anyone who registers to attend. The program will include presentations on the current status of medication issues in racing; an overview of exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage and its impact upon horse health; management and treatment alternatives for EIPH; and testing issues surrounding treatment for EIPH.

These topics will be followed by international panel discussions on regulatory issues surrounding race day medication; veterinary viewpoints on the management of EIPH; and the management of EIPH from a trainer’s perspective.

The second day of the summit is closed to the public and media. The agenda for day two is a facilitated discussion among RMTC members and invited guests.

Among those scheduled to participate in panel discussions are United States-based trainers Kiaran McLaughlin and H. Graham Motion; John Size, who trains in Hong Kong and Australia; and United Kingdom-based trainer John Gosden via a pre-recorded videotape.

Participating veterinarians include John McVeigh, of the U.K., South Africa, and France; Foster Northrop of the U.S.; Rod Daniel, who has worked in the U.S. and Dubai; Australia’s Treve Williams; and Rob Pilsworth of the U.K., also via pre-recorded videotape.

Regulators to participate in panel discussions include Denis Egan of Ireland, Bill Nader and Brian Stewart from Hong Kong; and Anthony Stirk from the U.K. An overview of the day’s discussions will be presented at the conclusion of the panel discussions.

The cost to attend the first day of the summit is $40 per person, with admission including lunch at Belmont Park.
