Aaron and Marie Jones have bought multiple grade I winner Evening Jewel to add to their broodmare band. The 4-year-old filly, who is from the female family of grade I winners General Challenge and Notable Career, will arrive June 1 at the Taylor family’s Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky.
“She had everything we were looking for,” said Frank Taylor, who assisted the Joneses in the transaction. “She was a great racemare, good looking, and from a very good family. She also was extremely sound.”
An $8,000 Keeneland September sale yearling Evening Jewel won or placed in 15 of 19 races and earned $1,221,399 for owners Tom and Marilyn Braly while trained by James Cassidy. Evening Jewel enjoyed her best season last year at 3 when she won the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (gr. I), the Del Mar Oaks (gr. IT), and a pair of grade II stakes in California. Her stakes-placing in 2010 included a runner-up effort in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) in which she was beaten a nose by subsequent champion Blind Luck, and third-place finishes in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (gr. I) and the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (gr. IT).
This year, the California-bred filly won the Sunshine Millions Distaff Stakes. In what was her last start, she finished sixth in the Humana Distaff Stakes (gr. I) at Churchill Downs May 7.
By Taylor Made stallion Northern Afleet , Evening Jewel was bred by the late Betty Mabee and her son, Larry Mabee, and was produced from the Giant’s Causeway mare Jewel of the Night, who is a half sister to stakes winners Petition the Lady and Saucey Evening. Evening Jewel's dam is a full sister to General Meeting and a half sister to Notable Career.
Evening Jewel will not be bred this year. No decision has been reached as to a mate for 2012.
Unbridled’s Song stands at Taylor Made.
