Indian Legend Nips Tar Heel Mom in My Juliet

Rich My Juliet purse goes to surprising 10-1 shot at Philadelphia's Parx Racing.

Indian Legend registered the first stakes win of her career when she outlasted prohibitive favorite Tar Heel Mom by a nose following a long stretch duel in the $250,000 My Juliet at Philadelphia's Parx Racing May 28 (VIDEO).

Angel Arroyo, aboard the filly for the first time, directed Indian Legend to an upset at nearly 11-1 odds for trainer Cynthia Reese and owner Wintickett Farm. J. Mack Robinson bred the 4-year-old daughter of Cherokee Run--Virginia Bee, by Virginia Rapids in Kentucky. The victory was worth $150,000.

Tar Heel Mom, ridden by Alex Solis in the six-furlong test for fillies and mares, blazed through opening fractions of :21.28 and :43.45. But she led by just a half-length over Indian Legend, who advanced from fifth to challenge along the inside leaving the quarter-pole. The duo hooked up at the top of the lane with Indian Legend getting her head in front at the eighth pole and managing to hold on in a terrific finish. The final time was a sharp 1:08.22.

A $15,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida select 2-year-olds in training purchase in 2009, Indian Legend improved her career mark to 4-4-1 in 14 starts with earnings of $284,120. She was coming off a 3 1/4-length allowance tally at Parx April 26, which preceded a runner-up finish to Harissa in the Langhorne Stakes over the same track a month earlier.

Indian Legend received 10 pounds from Tar Heel Mom while toting 114 and paid $23.80, $6, and $4.20 as the third choice in the field of six. Tar Heel Mom returned $2.10 and $2.10 as the 3-10 pick. It was 7 1/4 lengths to third-place finisher Brilliant Sunshine. She paid $4.20 with Kendrick Carmouche aboard. Lady Lucinda, Sweet Goodbye, and Lady Alexander trailed.
