Stakes Winner/Producer Thread Dies

Daughter of Claiborne stallion Topsider produced two-time grade II winner Wend.

Thread, a stakes winner and dam of multiple grade II winner Wend, died May 18 at the Hancock family’s Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky. The 20-year-old mare broke a leg in a paddock accident. She was scheduled to be bred the day of her death.

Thread’s sire, Topsider, and broodmare sire, Majestic Light, stood at Claiborne. A Claiborne homebred out of Knot, Thread won the Palisades Stakes and the Audubon Oaks, both on turf, and was stakes-placed three times on grass. She exited racing with six wins from 18 starts and earnings of $242,133.

Wend, by Claiborne stallion Pulpit, also excelled on turf. She won four stakes including the New York Handicap (gr. IIT) and the Jenny Wiley Stakes (gr. IIT), and set a course record at Gulfstream Park. She earned $579,841. Wend is a broodmare for Claiborne.

Thread, dam of three other winners, produced an Arch colt April 17. Arch, who stands at Claiborne, is also the sire of Thread’s yearling filly.
