CHRB Probes Mistake in A Gleam Finish Order

Fourth-place finisher was posted incorrectly; officals to determine what happened.

The California Horse Racing Board has started an investigation into the posting of the incorrect official order of finish of the A Gleam Handicap (gr. II) at Hollywood Park July 16.

The ninth-race error involved the posting of the fourth-place horse, which affected superfecta wagers and purses. The CHRB said in statement released July 17 that it will issue a public report as soon as possible on precisely what occurred, whether a complaint will be issued, and what the possible resolutions may be.

The official result initially had #7 Washington Bridge as the fourth-place finisher for the superfecta payoff. After approximately two minutes, officials corrected the error, putting #6 Mildly Offensive in the fourth spot. Mildly Offensive finished a nose in front of Washington Bridge, according to the official race chart by Equibase.

The superfecta payoff with Washington Bridge in fourth paid $847.80 for a $1 wager. The corrected payoff with Mildly Offensive was worth $611.30.

“The minute we noticed it we called mutuels and had them stop and recalculate and had them put up the correct number,” steward Kim Sawyer told Daily Racing Form.

One race official who asked not to be identified said about $20,000 was paid out before the mistake was corrected.
