Smarty Jones , the 2004 champion 3-year-old male and that year’s Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner, has arrived for Southern Hemisphere stallion duty in Uruguay. He stood the Northern Hemisphere season at Tarry Bratton’s Ghost Ridge Farms near Felton, Pa
“He had a tranquil trip and got off in Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo, Uruguay, July 19,” according to Ricardo Colombo, who helped arrange the deal to stand Smarty Jones in Uruguay. “He was an excellent traveler and arrived in good order.”
Smarty Jones will undergo quarantine and head two weeks later to Haras Cuatro Piedras to stand at stud.
Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality—I’ll Get Along, by Smile) missed his chance to become the 12th Triple Crown winner when he ran second in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). He initially stood at Robert N. Clay’s Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky., before ending up at Ghost Ridge. He is scheduled to be returned to Ghost Ridge for the 2012 Northern Hemisphere season.
Smarty Jones has sired eight stakes winners including 2011 graded winner Gilded Gem.
