Northern California Sale to be Held Aug. 16

Alameda County Fairgrounds to host one-day event; 104 yearlings among 123 offered.

The 2011 Northern California Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale, with 123 horses cataloged, is Aug. 16 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton beginning at noon.

Since the sale returned under the direction of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association in 2004, it has produced stakes winners such as Bai and Bai, an earner of $724,983; Grade II winner Sierra Sunset; and Grade III winner Autism Awareness.

All 123 horse in this year's catalog were foaled in California. There are 104 yearlings and 19 horses of racing age. The catalog is availabe online at

Prominent California sires Atticus, Benchmark, Bertrando, Lucky Pulpit, Marino Marini, Old Topper, Sea of Secrets, Siberian Summer, Southern Image, Stormin Fever, and Swiss Yodeler are represented in this year's sale.

In 2010, the auction yielded total receipts of $357,400 for the reported sale of 82 yearlings, according to the CTBA. The average price was $4,359 while the median was $3,000. The buy-back rate was 39.3%, with 53 of the 135 horses offered going unsold.
