A.P. Indy Colt Rings $1.4M Bell at Keeneland

A.P. Indy colt was consigned by the Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency.

A group of Californians went to $1.4 million to buy an A.P. Indy colt to highlight the Sept. 11 opening session of the Keeneland September yearling sale in Lexington.

Consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, the colt was purchased by a group that includes John Amerman, Robert "Shel" Evans, and an unnamed third partner.

The colt is out of the Deputy Minister mare Malka, who is out of the graded stakes winner Get Lucky. Supercharger, the dam of Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Super Saver  and graded stakes winner Brethren , is a daughter of Get Lucky along with stakes winners Girolamo, Daydreaming, Accelerator, and Harborage. Get Lucky also produced She’s a Winner, the dam of Bluegrass Cat .

According to agent Bob Feld, the group was put together earlier in the day to acquire the colt, who will be trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale. Drysdale, who trained A.P. Indy, and his wife, Shawn Dugan, also advised the buyers and helped pick out the colt.

Feld said he was surprised that the group was able to get the colt for $1.4 million.

“I really can’t believe he went for $1.4 million,” Feld said. “He is priceless as far as I am concerned. With his looks and being by A.P. Indy…there aren’t going to be too many more A.P. Indys with that kind of pedigree. I thought it was a very good price for him. The plan is to win the Kentucky Derby.”

“He was right in the range we thought,” Hill ‘n’ Dale’s John Sikura said of the final price. “He’s an outstanding horse. I am thrilled that Neil Drysdale bought the horse. He said he resembles A.P. Indy more than any yearling he’s seen. Same head, same neck, same way of moving. So that was a great endorsement. He’s one of the very few horses in the catalog who, if he is successful, could be worth any kind of money.”
