Secretariat Festival Set for Sept. 23-24

The Paris, Ky.-based festival honors Penny Chenery and the legend of Secretariat.

The Bourbon County Secretariat Festival Committee announced the complete schedule of events for the Secretariat Festival. The festival will be held Sept. 23–24 in Paris, Ky.

Festivities begin Friday, Sept. 23, with the Paris Art Walk from 5–9 p.m. and the Makers Mark Celebrity Barrel Mane-ia Auction at 8 p.m. in Paris. 

Festival events resume the morning of Sept. 24 with the Big Red 5K Race/Walk at Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs. The remainder of activities and performances will happen at the Bourbon County Fair Grounds with free admission. 

“We are looking forward to another great weekend this year honoring Laffit Pincay, a member of Racing’s Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Derby-winning jockey of Swale, as well as Penny Chenery and Secretariat,” said Dell Hancock, co-owner of Claiborne Farm, in a release. “Claiborne Farm is proud to have been the home of Secretariat and is thrilled to sponsor the fourth annual Secretariat Festival.”

Festival events at the fairgrounds Sept. 24 include:

• Autograph session with Secretariat's Meadow Stable team--owner Penny Chenery, jockey Ron Turcotte, exercise rider Charlie Davis, and special guests Kentucky Derby winning jockeys Laffit Pincay and Pat Day. Session begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Exhibition Hall.

• Claiborne Farm tours--departing from the Sosby Arena every half hour beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting until 3 p.m. Tours are $25 per person, and children 12 and under are free. Tours include a complimentary Secretariat gift.

• Secretariat Gallery and silent auction in the Exhibition Hall. Bidding closes at 4 p.m.

• Secretariat the movie--video will play on a continuous loop all day in the Bland Building.

Other events include a demonstration by the Secretariat Center of the Kentucky Horse Park on retraining adoptable horses; and a “Living Legends Stallion Presentation” by Old Friends.

Trade booths at the festival will include Secretariat merchandise, concessions, arts and crafts vendors, activities for kids, and door prizes.
