Square Eddie Works Bullet for Ancient Title

Son of Smart Strike worked a :35 3/5 bullet for three furlongs.

J. Paul Reddam’s grade I winner Square Eddie , who emerged from retirement for a second time earlier this year, worked a bullet three furlongs in :35 3/5 at Santa Anita Sept. 18 in preparation for a probable start in the $250,000 Ancient Title Stakes (g. I) Oct. 8 at Santa Anita.

Trainer Doug O'Neill clocked the 5-year-old horse galloping out five furlongs in 1:01. “It's exactly what we wanted from him,” O'Neill said.

Five-year-old Square Eddie (Smart Strike—Forty Gran, by El Gran Senor) spent both the 2010 and 2011 breeding seasons at Vessels Stallion Farm near Bonsall, Calif. He has won or placed in eight of 16 races and earned $854,766.

O'Neill said he is hoping to make the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) with Square Eddie.
