Orchid's Silver, sent off at 26-1 odds, came from off the pace to nip favored Class Included by a neck in the $100,000 Ballerina Stakes (Can-III) (VIDEO) on the closing day of the Hastings Racecourse season Oct. 2 in Vancouver, B.C.
The 1 1/8-mile test for fillies and mares on the Hastings bullring shared top billing with the B.C. Premiers Handicap. The Premiers, at 1 3/8 miles, was won a race later on the card by favored Jebrica, ridden by Vancouver native Russell Baze.
With Isaias Cardenas aboard, Orchid's Silver registered her first stakes win for owners Nick and Pauline Felicella and trainer Lenore Dubois. The winner is a 5-year-old gray/roan mare by Orchid's Devil--Simply Silver, by Simply Majestic. Par D Stable bred Orchid's Silver in British Columbia.
Orchid's Silver completed the distance in 1:50.30.
Class Included, the 6-5 choice ridden by Baze, finished second by one length over Dashing Daisy and Mario Gutierrez.
Overvalued, under pressure from Dashing Daisy, dueled on the lead through fractions of :23.74, :47.78, and 1:11.97 as British Columbia Oaks winner Class Included stalked in third. Class Included took command leaving the final turn.
Class Included looked like a sure winner but she weakened in the short stretch, allowing Orchid's Silver to nail her in the last strides. Dashing Daisy held on for third by one length over Summer Song.
Third by a neck behind Dashing Daisy in the nine-furlong Delta Colleen Stakes at Hastings Sept. 5, Orchid's Silver picked up her sixth lifetime win in 28 starts.
She paid $55.90, $12.30, and $5.50, while keying a $165.70 exacta with the strong favorite. Class Included returned $3.70 and $2.40. Dashing Daisy was $2.10 to show.
