Crown of Thorns Retired from Racing

The son of Repent captured two grade II events and earned $821,693.

Spendthrift Farm’s multiple grade II winner Crown of Thorns has been retired from racing because of a nagging knee problem. A decision has not been reached as to where he will enter stud.

Crown of Thorns captured the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) in 2008 and the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap (gr. II) in 2011. He finished second in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) and Ancient Title Stakes (gr. I) in 2009 and the Pat O’Brien (gr. I) and Goodwood (gr. I) stakes in 2010. He also was third in this year’s Pat O’Brien. The bay horse by Repent won three of his 13 career races and earned $821,693.

Bred in Florida by Clover Leaf Farms II, Crown of Thorns was consigned by Cloverleaf and Brent Fernung, agents, to the 2007 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. March select sale of 2-year-olds in training. Spendthrift owner, B. Wayne Hughes, purchased him for $300,000.
