D' Funnybone , a five-time grade II winner for Paul Pompa Jr., will enter stud in 2012 at Tom Simon’s Vinery New York at Sugar Maple Farm near Poughquag, N.Y. His fee is $3,500. The 4-year-old colt is by D'wildcat, who stands at Vinery Florida.
“This horse was one of the best 2-year-olds of his generation and was an outstanding 3-year-old,” said Vinery president Tom Ludt.
D’ Funnybone was a debut 7 1/4-length winner at Calder Race Course at 2. Later that year he won the Saratoga Special Stakes (gr. II) by 10 1/2 lengths and the Futurity Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont Park.
At 3, D' Funnybone recorded a 99 Beyer Speed Figure in his triumph in the Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park. He then won the Swale Stakes (gr. II) over the same track. Sent to New York, D’ Funnybone won the Woody Stephens Stakes (gr. II), earning a 100 Beyer and defeating subsequent grade I winner Discreetly Mine.
D’ Funnybone, who was stakes-placed this year, was retired with six wins from 15 starts and earnings of $686,700.
Bred in Florida by Harold J. Plumley and out of the winning Woodman mare Elbow, D’ Funnybone is a half brother to stakes winner Dr. Kathy. D’ Funnybone’s third dam is grade I winner Chain Bracelet. D’ Funnybone’s female family includes champions Forty Niner and Swale.
