Trainer Ben Cecil confirmed that Medaglia d'Amour will be scratched from the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I) Nov. 4 after spiking a temperature the day before the race.
A 30-1 morning-line outsider, the 5-year-old mare is based in California with Cecil. She is winless in three starts this year, her best finish coming in the Sept. 5 Palomar Handicap (gr. IIT) at Del Mar when second. She was ninth in the Yellow Ribbon (gr. IT) in her most recent start.
“She’s definitely out,” Cecil said. “She had a 102 temperature this morning. I’m not saying it was going to be an easy race but we were certainly hopeful, so it’s disappointing.”
Owned by Kristina Cecil and Zillah Reddam, the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro —Izara, by Blushing John, has won three of seven lifetime starts including the 2010 Wilshire Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Hollywood Park.
Cecil said Medaglia d'Amour will be offered at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale Sunday, Nov. 6.
