Jockey John Davila Jr. and trainer Karl Grusmark each recorded milestone victories Nov. 14 at Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack. Davila notched his 3,000th career win with Royal Vessel in the eighth race after Grusmark got his 2,000th win with Honey’s Brutus in the fourth.
Davila began riding at Finger Lakes in 1983. He has earned 2,953 of his 3,000 wins at his home track.
The 47-year-old from Puerto Rico is on pace to win his 10th consecutive Finger Lakes jockey title this season. He is about to become the top rider at the western New York track for a record 12th time.
Davila is the fifth Finger Lakes jockey to register 3,000 wins. Leslie Hulet, Kevin Whitley, Paul Nicol Jr. and John Grabowski also reached the milestone during their careers.
“It’s a lot of wins and I feel blessed”, said Davila. “I never believed I’d win so many.”
Grusmark has been training since 1965. He has a total of 38 stakes wins on his résumé including a graded stakes triumph at Aqueduct in 2009 with Weathered.
