Remsen: Strong Pedigrees, Light Experience

Several for the nine-furlong Remsen Stakes have strong black-type pedigrees.

The field of 10 drawn for Aqueduct’s Remsen Stakes (gr. II) for 2-year-olds appears to be pretty light on experience, but several of the runners have strong pedigrees that may help the youngsters get the demanding nine furlongs. The $200,000 race is one of four graded stakes Nov. 26 at the Big A and is slated to go at 2:51 p.m.

The Remsen, the last major race for 2-year-olds and only one at nine furlongs, has long been thought of as a harbinger of who will be able to negotiate two-turns next year as 3-year-olds. Recent winners of the Remsen include last year’s winner To Honor and Serve, who would win the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II), Court Vision  (2007), Bluegrass Cat  (’05), Rockport Harbor (’04), and Coronado's Quest (’97). Last year’s runner-up, Mucho Macho Man  had a say in the classic picture, and Empire Maker  (third, ’02) would win the next year’s Belmont Stakes (gr. I).

This year’s edition has but one stakes winner in the field: Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence’s Managed Account. Managed Account has made three stakes appearances for trainer Teresa Pompay, and he’s improved with each outing. After finishing fourth in the six-furlong Sapling Stakes (gr. III) Sept. 3 at Monmouth, he ran third in the Monmouth Park NATC Futurity, also at six furlongs. Stretched to a mile, the dark bay or brown colt won the $75,000 Toccet Stakes at Aqueduct in 1:35.70.

A son of popular stallion Malibu Moon , Managed Account is out of Catinca, a daughter of Storm Cat who rattled off six graded stakes wins for owner Robert Waxman in the late 1990s including the grade I Ruffian Handicap and Delta Air Lines Top Flight Handicap (gr. II) run over the Thanksgiving day weekend in 1998.

Bred in Pennsylvania by Betty Moran’s Brushwood Stable, Managed Account was a $110,000 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. purchase earlier this year.

Recent maiden winner Stephanoatsee  has as strong a pedigree as any field. The son of leading sire A.P. Indy broke his maiden second time out Oct. 21 at Laurel, drawing clear going a mile in 1:39.33.

Trained by Graham Motion for owner Len Riggio, the My Meadowview homebred is out of the Unbridled mare Oatsee. Oatsee, while only stakes-placed herself, has thrown three graded stakes winners from her seven previous foals including Lady Joanne, winner of the 1 1/4-mile Alabama Stakes (gr. I) and Shackleford , winner of this year’s Preakness Stakes (gr. I).

Trainer Todd Pletcher has a pair for the Remsen, lead by Repole Stable’s Our Entourage. After breaking his maiden at Belmont Park in mid-September, the son of Street Cry shipped to Keeneland to finish fifth behind Dullahan in the Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity Stakes (gr. I).

A $350,000 Keeneland September sale purchase, Our Entourage is out of Sand Springs, a daughter of Dynaformer who took down the Diana Stakes (gr. IT) in 2005. Our Entourage was bred in Kentucky by Colts Neck Stables.

Pletcher’s other runner, Let’s Go Stable’s El Padrino , broke his maiden in the Belmont Park Oct. 29 slop in his second venture postward by 12 3/4 lengths. The son of Pulpit took the field wire to wire covering a mile in 1:40.10.

Other strong players in field include O'Prado Again, Souper Speedy , and Speightscity.

O’Prado Again is owned by Donegal Racing, the same outfit that raced grade I winner Paddy O'Prado. The son of El Prado broke his maiden over the Polytrack at Keeneland Oct. 28.

Live Oak Stud’s homebred Souper Speedy—by Indian Charlie—is a half brother to Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) winner Brilliant Speed who was third behind St Nicholas Abbey in the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IT) earlier this month.

Speightscity broke his maiden in smashing fashion by 11 1/2 lengths at Saratoga, then ran ninth behind Hansen and Union Rags  in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I).
