Keeneland January Catalog Down Nearly 13%

Four-day sale to be held Jan. 9-12, 2012, in Lexington.

Keeneland has cataloged 1,594 horses for its four-day 2012 January horses of all ages sale, which is down 12.75% from the total 1,827 cataloged for the 2011 sale held over five days in Lexington. The 2012 auction is scheduled for Jan. 9-12.

Keeneland sales director Geoffrey Russell said the decline is a reflection of industry trends in which more mares have been taken out of production. That has resulted in fewer mares being offered for sale, and the smaller foal crops mean fewer yearlings (foals of 2011) available to be auctioned.

Comprising the 1,594 lots cataloged are 721 broodmares and broodmare prospects, 587 yearlings, 265 horses of racing age, 20 stallions or stallion prospects, and one share in Lemon Drop Kid . Catalogs will be available online at beginning Dec. 6, and print catalogs will be mailed the week of Dec. 19.

The January sale counts among its graduates recent grade I stakes winners Smiling Tiger , Afleet Express, and E Z's Gentleman; grade II winners Flashpoint, Joyful Victory, Meeznah, No Advantage, and Dancinginherdreams; and grade III winner Stunning Stag.

“The January sale appeals to buyers of all interests and market levels,” Keeneland vice president of sales Walt Robertson said. “As evidenced by our graduates, it offers exciting opportunities with regard to short yearlings and horses of racing age, and a strong selection of stakes-winning race fillies and broodmares in foal to some of the world’s most fashionable sires.”

Keeneland will offer broodmares in foal to 186 sires and yearlings representing 176 stallions.
