Refreshed Tres Borrachos Heads Native Diver

Six-year-old gelding back at favorite track after third-place finish in BC Dirt Mile.

Rejuvenated 6-year-old Tres Borrachos returns to his favorite track at Hollywood Park as the 119-pound top weight in the $100,000 Native Diver Handicap (gr. III) Dec. 3.

Tres Borrahochos is coming off a third-place finish at odds of 30-1 in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I) at Churchill Downs Nov. 5. Owned by George Hicker and Button Stable, he had earned his way into the race with an 8-1 upset in the San Diego Handicap (gr. III) July 30 for new trainer Marty Jones.

"He worked great and he’s run well on this track,” Jones said after the Ecton Park gelding drilled five furlongs in 1:02 3/5 over Hollywood's Cushion Track Nov. 26. He'll face six opponents in the 1 1/8-mile Native Diver, which is the eighth race on the Hollywood program with a 4:07 p.m. PST post.

Tres Borrachos has won just four of 34 lifetime starts, but three of them have been on the Hollywood surface, including a victory in the 2008 Swaps Stakes (gr. II). He also finished second in the 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I).

He snapped a 13-race losing streak with his 1 1/2-length triumph in the San Diego, which was a designated "Win & You're In Race" for the BC Dirt Mile. In the latter race, he rallied from last in the stretch to finish 5 3/4 lengths behind the victorious Caleb's Posse .

Tres Borrachos, who will break from post 6, with Joel Rosario aboard, has banked a field-best $864,257 in his career.

There are a couple of new faces in the Native Diver that figure to draw plenty of support.

The well-traveled Eldaafer, making his first start for trainer Brian Koriner, won the 2010 Breeders' Cup Marathon (gr. III), though he finished sixth in his bid to repeat Nov. 5. Shipped to Koriner after that effort, he is now owned by E-Racing.Com and Kevin Jacobsen.

The 6-year-old A. P. Indy gelding has been victorious in 11 of 32 starts while racing at 13 different tracks, earning $753,132. Joe Talamo has the ride.

Rescue Squad was shipped west from New York by trainer Shug McGaughey, whose 13-1 outsider Imagining  finished second in the Hollywood Derby (gr. IT) Nov. 27. Rescue Squad, 5-year-old by Dynaformer, has won only three of 16 starts but is two-for-two on synthetic surfaces, including an allowance victory at Keeneland at 1 1/8 miles in his last outing Oct. 21.

Owned by breeders Stuart S. Janney III and Phipps Stable, Rescue Squad arrived at Hollywood Nov. 21 after breezing four furlongs in a bullet :47 at Belmont Park the day before.

“He’s done great since he got here," assistant trainer Jennifer Patterson said. "He seems to really like the track." Mike Smith will ride Rescue Squad for the first time.

Trainer John Sadler entered Kettle Corn , an optional claiming allowance winner over the track Nov. 17 for C R K Stable. The 4-year-old son of Candy Ride  is making his stakes debut with Garrett Gomez aboard.

Summer Movie, trained by Art Sherman for George Krikorian, comes off an optional claiming win at Santa Anita Oct. 20 that ended a nine-racing loss string. The 4-year-old Holy Bull colt, making his first stakes appearance since finishing sixth in the 2010 Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT), worked five furlongs in 1:00 1/5 Nov. 27.

Tweebster will try to provide trainer Bob Baffert his second Native Diver win over a surface on which the ridgling has picked up two of his three victories. Baffert, the leading trainer at the Hollywood fall meet with 11 wins through 12 days, won the 1999 Native Diver with General Challenge.

Owned by Kaleem Shah, the son of Tapit  was a distant second behind stablemate Racing Aptitude in the restricted Yo Eleven Stakes Nov. 11, a race that followed a layoff of more than eight months. He will race without blinkers in the Native Diver.
