The logo for the 2012 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), second leg of the Triple Crown, was released by the Maryland Jockey Club Dec. 14.
For the 13th consecutive year, the Leffler Agency of Baltimore, Md., and Tampa, Fla., designed the official Preakness logo. The company’s Preakness designs have won major national awards for the agency five times.
The 2012 Preakness logo depicts the horse and jockey as repeating stylized graphics with curved elements that convey movement. The type treatment is simple and modern. Overall, the logo uses the traditional Maryland colors of red, gold, and black.
“The challenge of making a national logo like the Preakness logo every year is the challenge of uniqueness,” said Bob Leffler, agency president and owner.
The 2012 Preakness is scheduled for May 19 at Pimlico Race Course. Tickets have been on sale since October.
The MJC still has no official racing dates for 2012 at Pimlico or Laurel Park. The MJC and horsemen have been negotiating for more than a month, and the Maryland Racing Commission will meet Dec. 20 to consider dates.
