Winchell Buys Interest in Cowboy Cal

Millionaire Cowboy Cal won or placed in 11 stakes in three seasons.

Josephine Abercrombie’s Pin Oak Stud announced that Ron Winchell has purchased a significant interest in Cowboy Cal from Robert and Janice McNair’s Magnolia Racing.

“Over the last 30 years, I’ve come to recognize certain patterns in the physiology of the offspring of elite stallions. A majority of Cowboy Cal’s foals are demonstrating these significant patterns, so I believe that he represents a value way beyond his present stud fee,” said Dr. David Lambert of Equine Analysis, an advisor to Winchell.
Millionaire Cowboy Cal won or placed in 11 stakes in three seasons of racing. A highly-regarded juvenile with a maiden special weight win at Belmont and a 6 1/4-length win in the Laurel Futurity, the son of Giant's Causeway  went on to win or place in five of six starts as a 3-year-old including the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) and the Hollywood Derby (gr. IT).
His 4-year-old season included wins in the Strub Stakes (gr. II), San Pasqual Handicap (gr. II), and the Oak Tree Mile (gr. IIT).
Cowboy Cal’s first foals arrived this spring.
“Getting a partner with the expertise and experience of Ron Winchell, coupled with our successful, longtime relationship with Josephine Abercrombie, will give Cowboy Cal the best possible opportunity to make it as a top sire,” said Robert McNair, who bred and raced Cowboy Cal with his wife, Janice.
Cowboy Cal was bred in Kentucky and is out of the Seeking the Gold mare Texas Tammy.
