Champagne d'Oro to be Bred to Bernardini

Dual grade I winner retired following eighth-place finish in Monrovia Stakes Jan. 2.

Dual grade I winner Champagne d'Oro has been retired from racing and is scheduled to ship to Darley near Lexington Jan. 11 to be bred to Bernardini , according to trainer Eric Guillot.

Owned by Southern Equine Stable and Mike Smith, Champagne d'Oro finished eighth in the Monrovia Stakes (gr. IIIT) on the Santa Anita hillside turf course in her final start Jan. 2.

Though the 5-year-old Medaglia d'Oro  mare won just three times in 22 lifetime starts, two of her victories came in grade I races during a two-month span of her 3-year-old season in 2010. She won the Acorn Stakes (gr. I) and the Test Stakes (gr. I).

Champagne d'Oro, who earned $614,940 in her career, is out of stakes winner Champagne Glow (by Saratoga Six) and is a half sister to 2011 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Ruler On Ice.
