Michael Lauffer and Bill Cubbedge’s Shackleford and Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and partners’ Mucho Macho Man each moved closer to the start of their 2012 campaigns when posting workouts at Gulfstream Park Jan. 13.
Shackleford was timed five furlongs in 1:01 1/5 for trainer Dale Romans in his second recorded workout of the season. The son of Forestry scored his biggest victory in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and is being pointed to the Donn Handicap (gr. I) Feb. 11.
Mucho Macho Man went six furlongs in 1:13 4/5 for trainer Kathy Ritvo and is targeted for the Florida Sunshine Million Classic Jan. 28. The son of Macho Uno finished third behind Animal Kingdom in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and looked good winning an allowance race at Aqueduct Nov. 9 in his first start since the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) June 11.
Also prominent on the Jan. 13 morning work tab at Gulfstream were Jay Em Ess Stable’s 4-year-old Boys At Tosconova , who clocked five furlongs in 1:02 1/5; and Peachtree Stable’s 3-year-old filly Sacristy breezed an easy half-mile in :52 2/5.
Trained by Rick Dutrow, Boys At Tosconova is best known for finishing second to Uncle Mo in the 2010 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Churchill Downs and is on the comeback track after missing most of the 2011 season. The son of Officer scored in a one-mile allowance at Gulfstream Dec. 23 in his third start back.
Sacristy is a daughter of Pulpit trained by Wayne Catalano and was impressive winning the Old Hat Stakes (gr. III) over the track on New Year’s Day in her first start since a 6 3/4-length maiden victory at Churchill Downs Nov. 10. Sacristy will likely make her next start in the Forward Gal Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Jan. 29.
On Jan. 13 at Calder Race Course, two other major candidates for Sunshine Millions stakes hit the work tab. Pinnacle Racing Stables and trainer Bill Kaplan’s 5-year-old mare Musical Romance breezed a sharp five furlongs in 1:01. The Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (gr. I) winner is preparing for her expected 2012 debut in the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Sprint.
JoAnn and Alex Lieblong and partners’ 6-year-old handicap division star Duke of Mischief worked a bullet five furlongs in 1:00 3/5 for trainer Dave Fawkes. The son of Graeme Hall, an earner of nearly $1.7 million, finished second to Tackleberry in the 2011 Sunshine Millions Classic.
