Yoshida Purchases Top Mare Sarafina

Daughter of Refuse to Bend will be bred to top Japanese stallion Deep Impact.

Sarafina, who finished fourth as the 2-1 favorite in the $2,727,000 Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IT), has reportedly been purchased by Teruyo Yoshida’s Shadai Farm for approximately £5 million.

According to the Racing Post, the sale of the mare previously owned by owner-breeder H. H. Aga Khan was brokered by American-based bloodstock agent Eugenio Colombo.

Colombo declined comment and referred all inquiries to the Aha Khan’s French operation, which did not return phone calls.

The Racing Post reported that the 5-year-old daughter of Refuse to Bend will be bred to top Japanese stallion Deep Impact, a son of Sunday Silence who stands at Shadai Farm.

Trained by Alain De Royer-Dupre, Sarafina won or placed in nine of 11 starts, with three group I wins in France among her six career victories. Her group I wins came in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Montjeu Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary, and Prix de Diane-French Oaks. The mare also won the Prix Corrida and Qatar Prix Foy, both group II, and placed in three group I stakes in her native country.
