Union Rags Breezes Bullet Half

Champagne winner has solid tune-up for 3-year-old debut in Fountain of Youth

Union Rags , winner of the Champagne Stakes (gr. I) and runner-up in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I), breezed a solid half in :48 3/5 at Palm Meadows Feb. 6 in preparation for his 3-year-old debut in the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II).

The work was the fastest of 27 at the distance.

“He went nice, just what we were looking for,” trainer Michael Matz said. “He’s still on  schedule. He’ll have two more works and we’ll be ready to go. He’s filled out a little and has grown; he’s probably close to 17 hands. But he’s doing good and the main thing is to get to the Derby in good shape.”

Another Fountain of Youth hopeful, the undefeated Discreet Dancer, was forced to miss his work Monday after spiking a slight fever, putting his status for the 1 1/16-mile race in doubt.

At Gulfstream Park, Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) runner-up Ever So Lucky breezed five furlongs in 1:01 3/5 for his scheduled debut in the seven-furlong Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) Feb. 11.
