Justin Shepherd to Miss Rest of Oaklawn Meet

Rider broke left shoulder and five ribs in fall March 1.

Jockey Justin Shepherd will miss the remainder of the Oaklawn Park meet after suffering a broken left shoulder and five broken ribs in a riding accident March 1.

Shepherd, 25, was aboard El Oso in the fifth race when the horse broke down at top of the stretch. El Oso was euthanized with a compound fracture to his left ankle.

Jockey Alex Birzer was also thrown when his mount, Dynamic Within, was knocked off stride by the fallen horse. Both horse and rider escaped serious injury. Birzer continued to ride and won the featured eighth race aboard Stachys.

According to his brother and fellow jockey, Dusty Shepherd, Justin was still at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital March 2 but was comfortable.

The current Oaklawn meet ends April 14.
