Portland Meadows announced the new stakes schedule for the upcoming inaugural summer and fall meets that kicks off July 15. Headlining the schedule is the 47th running of the Portland Mile on Labor Day, Sept. 3. The Labor Day card will feature six stakes races and will be one of the showcase days of the season.
“We’re very thankful to the Oregon Horsemen’s and Benevolent Association, the Oregon Quarter Horse Association, and the Oregon Throughbred Owners and Breeders Association for all their support and helping us in creating the stakes schedule,” said director of racing Jerry Kohls in a release. “Also a special thanks to the Oregon HBPA and the Oregon Racing Commission for their support so we can maintain the same overnight purse schedule as the most recently concluded 2011-2012 meet.”
Oregon Championship Day will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 17 and will feature five stakes events for Oregon-breds, including the $20,000 Oregon Futurity for 2-year-olds at a mile.
There will also be three of the popular Claiming Series’ that will be run during the summer and fall meets. The City of Roses Filly and Mare Claiming Series will begin Aug. 15 and will conclude Sept. 19 with a $20,000 final.
The McFadden Memorial Sprint Claiming Series will kick off Aug. 22 and will wrap up with its third and final leg Sept. 26, which will be a $20,000 event. The Oregon HBPA Route Claiming Series will kick off Oct. 28 and will conclude on closing day, Dec. 8. All of the Claiming Series events are three-part series, with Leg 1 in each series being a $2,500 claiming event, Leg 2 being a $4,000 event, and the Finals featuring a $20,000 purse.
