Champion Musical Romance Tops Madison Field

Other grade I winner in seven furlong sprint is Home Sweet Aspen.

Musical Romance, the 2011 champion female sprinter, tops the field of 10 fillies and mares set to contest the $300,000 Vinery Madison Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland on April 12.

A daughter of Concorde's Tune bred in Florida by Ocala Stud, Musical Romance races for Pinnacle Racing Stable and Bill Kaplan, who also trains the 5-year-old mare. During her championship campaign of 2011, Musical Romance had five wins, all in stakes company, from 14 starts, with four placings.

The season was highlighted by an upset victory at 20-1 odds in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (gr. I) at seven furlongs, the same distance as the Madison. In addition to her Breeders’ Cup win, Musical Romance won the Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes (gr. II), as well as three listed stakes at Calder. Previous to the Madison, the mare won the Inside Information Stakes (gr. II).

Regular rider Juan Leyva will be aboard Musical Romance, who breaks from the No. 2 post position as the 123-pound co-high weight.

Also weighted at 123 is the other grade I winner in the field—Home Sweet Aspen. A homebred for the Craig Stables, Home Sweet Aspen has won or placed second in seven of 10 starts for trainer John Sadler.

The 4-year-old daughter of Candy Ride  who breaks from the rail under jockey Joel Rosario won Santa Anita’s Santa Monica (gr. I) at seven furlongs in January.
