Havre de Grace Works 5 Furlongs at Churchill

Horse of Year preps for La Troienne; Mucho Macho Man also works for Alysheba.

Havre de Grace, pointing for the $300,000 La Troienne Stakes (gr. II), worked five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 over a fast track at Churchill Downs early on the morning of April 22 with exercise rider Jen Brasser aboard.

Also on the Churchill work tab was Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Dream Team One Racing Stable’s Mucho Macho Man .
Owned by Fox Hill Farms, Havre de Grace, the 2011 Horse of the Year, posted fractions of :12 2/5, :24 2/5, :36 2/5, and :48. She galloped out six furlongs in 1:14 3/5. The move was the fifth fastest of 47 at the distance.
“It was a good work,” trainer Larry Jones said. “It was her first work in two weeks and she will work again next Sunday (April 29).”

The La Troienne, for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles, is part of the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) program May 4.

Havre de Grace last raced March 17 when she won the New Orleans Ladies Stakes. The 5-year-old daughter of Saint Liam was being pointed to the Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I) at Oaklawn Park April 13. She was withdrawn from consideration when her connections objected to the weight assignments for the race and pointed to the La Troienne instead.

The bay mare has a career record of 9-4-2 in 16 starts with earnings of more than $2.5 million.
Mucho Macho Man, the third-place finisher in last year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), prepped for a run in the May 4 Alysheba Stakes Presented by Besilu Stables (gr. II). He worked five furlongs in 1:01 under exercise rider Nick Petro.
Mucho Macho Man posted fractions of :13, :24 4/5, :36 3/5, :48 4/5, and out six furlongs in 1:14 4/5.
“It was a very good work,” trainer Kathy Ritvo said of the colt’s third breeze at Churchill this month.
Mucho Macho Man, who won the Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. II) in his last start March 10, is scheduled for one more work before the Alysheba.
