Due to a drop in wagering handle from all sources, Betfair Hollywood Park announced June 9 that it is reducing purses beginning June 14.
The track blamed an unexpected decline in field size resulting in a drop in wagering for the decision. Entries for the June 14 races will take place June 10.
Non-claiming and maiden allowance races will be cut $2,000. While claiming races will be reduced $1,000, the track noted they will remain, in nearly all cases, higher or close to the same levels that were offered during the winter/spring meet at Santa Anita Park that concluded April 22.
Additionally, the purses of three upcoming stakes will be reduced. The American Oaks (gr. IT), which will be run for the 11th time July 14, has been cut from $400,000 to $350,000. Both the Landaluce and the Hollywood Juvenile Championship (gr. III), which will also be part of the July 14 program, have dropped from $200,000 to $150,000.
Even with the reductions, the purses for the American Oaks, Landaluce, and Hollywood Juvenile Championship are larger than the purses for those races in 2011. The purse for last year’s American Oaks was $250,000 while the Landaluce and Hollywood Juvenile Championship were $100,000 races.
