The Racing Medication and Testing Consortium said July 11 it hired Dr. Dionne Benson as executive director and chief operating officer.
In her new position, which she assumed July 9, Benson will provide administrative oversight of RMTC-funded research projects, implementation of laboratory drug-testing standards, and development and promotion of uniform medication rules, policies, and guidelines.
The RMTC is a group of 25 industry stakeholders that makes policy recommendations.
"We are thrilled to have Dr. Benson on board," RMTC chairman Dr. Robert Lewis said. "She will provide the RMTC with strong leadership and scientific expertise, enabling great progress in the critical areas of research development, drug-testing advancement, and medication policy uniformity."
Benson takes over from Jamie Haydon, an employee of The Jockey Club who served as interim executive director. The previous executive director was Dr. Scot Waterman, who left last year.
Benson most recently completed a veterinary internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington. In that position Benson rotated through the areas of surgery, anesthesia, and medicine, and was responsible for primary patient care.
Benson has worked as a veterinary assistant to Dr. V. Don Newcomb at Canterbury Park and as a detention barn technician for the Minnesota State Veterinarian's office.
