Shadwell Turf Mile Purse Hiked to $750,000

One of 17 stakes, 15 of which are graded, scheduled for Keeneland's fall meet.

Keeneland announced July 16 it is increasing the purse for the Shadwell Turf Mile (gr. IT) to $750,000, making it the co-richest race run at the Lexington track this year.

The Shadwell Turf, which will be renewed Oct. 6 as part of the “Fallstars Weekend,” is one of three stakes included in the fall stakes schedule with higher purses than in 2011.

The Keeneland fall meet from Oct. 5-27 will feature 17 stakes, 15 of which are graded, with purses totaling $4.5 million. Also receiving purse increases this year are two grade III races, the Woodford and Bourbon, which are now worth $150,000 each. According to The Jockey Club Information Systems, the 18 stakes contested during the 2011 Keeneland fall meet totaled $4,475,000 in purses.

Won by multiple champion Gio Ponti  each of the last two years, the Shadwell Mile was worth $600,000 in 2011. With the purse boost, it now joins the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) as the richest races to be run at Keeneland this year. Shadwell has sponsored the Mile since 1999.

"We are very excited, in partnership with Keeneland, to further enhance the status of the Shadwell Turf Mile, and to secure its position as one of the country’s most prestigious grass races," said Rick Nichols, vice president and general manager of Shadwell Farm, in a release.

"Shadwell Farm is an invaluable member of the Keeneland family, and we greatly appreciate their strong commitment to Thoroughbred racing," said Keeneland vice president of racing W. B. Rogers Beasley in a statement. "The Shadwell Turf Mile is a centerpiece of FallStars Weekend, and this purse increase assures it will continue to attract the nation’s top turf horses."

Seven "FallStars Weekend" stakes are among the series of automatic qualifying races for the Breeders' Cup World Championships to be held Nov. 2-3 at Santa Anita Park. The Breeders’ Cup Challenge races and the respective Breeders' Cup races for which the winners qualify are:

Bourbon (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, gr. IT), grade I Darley Alcibiades (Grey Goose Juvenile Fillies, gr. I), and grade III Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (Sprint, gr. I), all to be run Oct. 5; grade I Shadwell Turf Mile (Mile, gr. IT), grade I Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity (Grey Goose Juvenile, gr. I), and grade II Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (Filly & Mare Sprint, gr. I), all on Oct. 6; and the grade I Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (Ladies’ Classic, gr. I) on Oct. 7.

The JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (gr. IIIT), an automatic qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT), is scheduled for Oct. 11.
