Lightning Cancels Friday Program at Calder

Florida track calls off live race card after excessive delay prior to first race.

An extended delay prior to the first race brought about by periods of excessive lightning led officials at Calder Casino & Race Course to cancel its 11-race live racing program for Aug. 3.

“Our priority is the safety of the human and equine participants in our sport,” said John Marshall, vice president and general manager of racing. “I spoke to our racing secretary Mike Anifantis, and he intends on bringing today’s canceled races back as extras to give the trainers and owners that expected to run today an opportunity to compete.”

Calder remained open for full-card simulcasting. Live racing is scheduled to resume Aug. 4 at 12:55 p.m. with a 12-race card.
