Jockey Richard Eramia, leading the rider standings at Harrah's Louisiana Downs, earned his 1,000th North American victory when he guided 3-5 favorite Shave and Pave to victory in the fourth race Aug. 31 at the Bossier City, La., track (VIDEO).
According to Equibase, the milestone win came in a maiden special weight race at 1 1/16 miles for trainer Tony Richey. Israel Flores Horses owns Shave and Pave, a 3-year-old by Stephen Got Even.
Eramia has 112 wins at the current Louisiana Downs meet as of Aug. 31, and leads his nearest challenger, Donald Simington, by 37 victories.
A five-time champion in his native Uruguay, Eramia earned his first North American win Feb. 22, 2005 at Tampa Bay Downs. He won his first riding title last year at Louisiana Downs.
Eramia is the regular rider of Gantry, who won the $400,000 Smile Sprint Handicap (gr. II) July 7 at Calder Casino & Race Track. With that victory, Gantry earned an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) Nov. 3 at Santa Anita Park.
According to Equibase, Eramia has had 6,911 mounts since 2005 with total purse earnings of $19,181,896. His best year was 2011, when he won 218 races from 1,288 starts with earnings of more than $4.2 million.
