Musical Romance Continues Working Toward Cup

Champion mare will seek second Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint victory.

Champion Musical Romance breezed six furlongs in 1:14 1/5 at Calder Casino & Race Course Oct. 18 as she continues to work toward a defense of her title in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (gr. I).

"This morning's work went very well and she came back great," trainer Bill Kaplan said, adding that the mare would likely work again Oct. 25. "Everything is still going along as planned."

Following her Oct. 25 work, the daughter of Concorde's Tune will be shipped to Kentucky via van and then fly to Southern California Oct. 27. "We don't have anything serious planned for her once she gets out there; we'll obviously be taking her to the track to jog and we'll give her a good five-eighths gallop one of the days," the trainer said.

Racing for Kaplan and Pinnacle Racing Stables, the champion mare has won 12 of 40 career starts with earnings of $1,681,885. Included in her eight victories at Calder was this year's running of the grade I Princess Rooney Handicap.

While Kaplan is looking forward to taking Musical Romance to Santa Anita Park for the World Championships, he has mixed emotions about what will be the mare's final career start.

"I'm very much looking forward to it," Kaplan said. "But it is a little bittersweet because it's been so great having her in the barn. She certainly made my job a lot more fun, and it's a little difficult thinking about her being gone."

Musical Romance has been cataloged as part of the Three Chimneys consignment to the Nov. 5 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November select mixed sale in Lexington.
