Stakes Winner Kantharos to Ocala Stud

Unbeaten son of Lion Heart was a graded winner at Churchill and Saratoga.

Kantharos , an undefeated multiple graded stakes winner at 2, has been relocated to J. Michael O'Farrell Jr.'s Ocala Stud near Ocala, Fla., for the 2013 breeding season.

The 4-year-old stallion (Lion Heart--Contessa Halo, by Southern Halo) previously stood at Vinery, Ltd-Florida near Summerfield.

"We're thrilled to have the opportunity to add an exciting young stallion prospect like Kantharos to our roster," O'Farrell said. "I think everybody understands how dominant and precocious of a racehorse he was, as well as how physically good-looking of a stallion he is. But what sold me was how he's passing those looks down to his offspring. We have a couple of his first weanlings here on the farm, and they're outstanding individuals, and we're hearing great things around town about his babies."

A $250,000 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. March sale 2-year-old, Kantharos broke his maiden by 11 3/4 lengths in :57.99 for five furlongs at Churchill Downs. He then won the Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill by 9 1/2 lengths and the Saratoga Special Stakes (gr. II) by 7 1/4 lengths.

Kantharos, whose first foals are weanlings, is a half brother to two stakes winners including graded winner Ikigai.

A fee will be announced later.
