Centre Court Gets High Weight in Mrs. Revere

Runner-up in past two starts looks for win Nov. 17 at Churchill Downs.

Centre Court carries top weight in a full field of 12 sophomore fillies looking to capitalize on one of the last local grass stakes of the season, the $175,000-added Mrs. Revere Stakes (gr. IIT) at Churchill Downs Nov. 17.

The Mrs. Revere, 1 1/16 miles on the lawn, is race nine of 11 on a night racing card at the Louisville oval, with an approximate post time of 8:36 p.m. EST. The only "Downs After Dark" program offered during the fall meet will have a "Roaring 20s" theme.

Centre Court, a sophomore daughter of Smart Strike trained by Rusty Arnold, has been playing the bridesmaid with runner-up finishes in her past two starts—the Oct. 13 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (gr. IT) at Keeneland and the Aug. 19 Woodford Reserve Lake Placid Stakes (gr. IIT) at Saratoga Race Course. Earlier in the season, she broke her maiden and won the Regret (gr. IIIT) at Churchill, then took the Lake George (gr. IIT) at Saratoga for owner G. Watts Humphrey Jr.
Julien Leparoux makes up part of a 120-pound impost leaving from the seven hole.
All other runners in the field carry 118, including Bert, Elaine, and Richard Klein's Miz Ida. The 3-year-old Proud Citizen filly seeks her fourth consecutive stakes victory in the 22nd running of the Mrs. Revere. Since finishing seventh in the Edgewood on Kentucky Oaks Day, Miz Ida has scored in the Indiana Downs Distaff, Kentucky Downs Ladies, and Pin Oak Valley View (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland Oct. 19.
"She's doing really good right now," trainer Steve Margolis said. "She's been working good and everything has been really positive.
"I think we've learned something about her since the Edgewood. She was close to the pace and was a little rank in the Edgewood. All of her best races are when she comes from a little further behind. Since the Edgewood, she's been dropping back and settling and making a run. That seems to be her style."
Miz Ida, a Kentucky homebred, is out of the multiple stakes winner May Gator. On Nov. 15, May Gator's 2-year-old by Sharp Humor, Gator Zone, will make her career debut in the seventh race at Churchill. She also is owned by the Kleins and trained by Margolis. She will break from post 12 under Shaun Bridgmohan.
"She's been training good and we're looking forward to it," Margolis said. "We've taken our time with her and she should give a good account of herself. We didn't get the most ideal post. I'd rather have the 12 than the one, but ideally, we'd like to have the six or seven."
Other key contenders in the Mrs. Revere include Team Block's Leading Astray, winner of the Pucker Up Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Arlington Park this summer and third in the Valley View; Fred Allor's English Class, runner-up in the Valley View in her stakes debut last out for trainer Bryan Lynch; and Ontario Colleen Stakes (gr. IIIT) winner Colonial Flag, fifth in the Valley View for Skara Glen Stable, Will S. Farish, and ENL Stables and trainer Michael Matz. Volcat also exits the Valley View, albeit a ninth-place finish. Landaluce Educe Stables' After Market filly won the Virginia Oaks (gr. IIIT) and was third in the Pucker Up for trainer Kenny McPeek.
Caroline Forgason's Somali Lemonade exits a fifth in the Queen Elizabeth and seeks her first victory since taking the JP Morgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (gr. IIIT) last year. The Michael Matz trainee has been a checkgetter in graded stakes all season, including a runner-up effort by a head in the Garden City (gr. IT) two outings back.
Winners of minor stakes last out are Lateegra, Peace Preserver, and Charged Cotton. Allowance winner Solid Appeal and maiden winner Regalo Mia complete the field.
