Eblouissante Scratched With Superficial Cut

Zenyatta's half sister bangs her hip in receiving barn prior to allowance race.

The much-anticipated second start for Zenyatta's half sister, Eblouissante, will have to wait. The 3-year-old filly banged her hip in the recieving barn prior to running and was a late scratch from the fourth race at Betfair Hollywood Park Dec. 15.

Eblouissante lost some of her hide in the incident, according to stewards at Hollywood Park. That necessitated her declaration from the race, an allowance/optional claimer at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track. The Kentucky bred daughter of Bernardini , out of the prolific Kris S. broodmare Vertigineux, was 1-9 when the scratch was announced less than 30 minutes prior to racetime.

"She bruised her hip,'' trainer John Shirreffs said. "It's hard to say (if she'll miss any training). We'll have to see how she is when she walks out of the stall (Sunday).''

Eblouissante was an impressive 4 1/2-length debut winner over maidens going 1 1/16 miles Nov. 16. The dark bay or brown filly is owned by her breeder, Eric Kronfeld, who also bred Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year. Shirreffs conditioned Zenyatta during a brilliant career that included 19 wins in 20 starts and earnings of $7,304,580.
