Borel Briefly Sidelined with Fractured Wrist

A minor wrist fracture needs time to heal, but the jockey shouldn't be out long.

Win 5,000 will have to wait. Veteran reinsman Calvin Borel has sustained a minor wrist fracture that will keep him on the sidelines for about 18 days.

"X-rays show what Calvin thought was a bad wrist sprain actually involves a minor fracture that will require a cast," the jockey's wife, Lisa Borel, posted on Facebook. "Our doctors believe he'll be out about 18 days. Will keep everyone posted."

Borel, 46, has won 4,999 races and plans to next ride at the upcoming Oaklawn Park meet which begins Jan. 11. The city of Hot Springs, Ark., has even issued trading cards with images of the popular rider to be distributed to fans on the day he gets the milestone score.
Among the Louisiana native's victories are three editions of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). He has ridden in 33,716 races with 4,487 seconds and 3,897 thirds, with his mounts bringing home earnings of $120,020,580.
