Rachel Alexandra, the 2009 Horse of the Year, was able to be taken off intravenous fluids and nutrition Feb. 23 at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington, according to Stonestreet Farm.
Veterinarians are encouraged by her progress as she continues to recover from abdominal surgery Feb. 13 for complications following the Feb. 12 delivery of her Bernardini   filly.
"I couldn't be happier with where she is right now," Dr. Brett Woodie said in a release from Stonestreet Farm.
As her vital signs remain normal and her strength improves, the 7-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro   has gone for longer walks each day and has enjoyed grazing and spending time outside.
Woodie and Dr. Bonnie Barr, the attending veterinarians, cautioned that Rachel Alexandra has hurdles yet to overcome, but they are pleased by her progress.
Provided her condition remains stable, Stonestreet said an update would be issued Feb. 28.
"We all look forward to a 'no news is good news' week," the release said.
