Saint Marden went from allowance winner to stakes winner after notching a 1 1/2-length win in Wednesday's Discovery Handicap (gr. III) on opening day at Aqueduct. Regency Park was second, with No Parole another 1 3/4 lengths back in third. Under jockey Jerry Bailey, the winner completed the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:49.13 over a fast track.

Trained by Michael Matz, Saint Marden races in the colors of Richard Walsh.

J.D. and Phyliss Bryant's Brylnn Farm bred the son of Saint Ballado out of the Afleet mare The Adminisrtator in Florida. He was purchased for $475,000 by 4 D Corporation at the 2000 Fasig-Tipton August Saratoga Selected yearling sale from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency.

Saint Marden scored an easy, open-length entry-level allowance win at Saratoga in early July before tackling tougher company in the Travers Stakes (gr. I), where he finished up the track in eighth and was beaten about 40 lengths by the winner, Medaglia d' Oro.

The Discovery winner next scored an eight-length allowance win at Belmont before trying stakes company again.

Following the win, Marz said Saint Marden would take the remainder of the year off and begin a 4-year-old campaign in Florida.
