93 Cataloged for John Franks Memorial Sale

Auction will be held March 17 at Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino.

Stemmans Inc. and Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino officials announced that 93 juveniles have been cataloged for the John Franks Memorial 2-year-olds in training sale March 17.

The 11th edition of the sale, named for the late Eclipse Award-winning owner, will begin at 10 a.m. CT at the track in Opelousas, La. A gallop preview show will start at noon March 16. Both the sale and gallop preview are free and open to the public.

As in previous years, a pair of races restricted to 2-year-olds that pass through the sales ring will be run at Evangeline Downs Sept. 7. One race will be for males and the other for fillies and each will be run at the distance of 5 1/2 furlongs on the main track and offer a $50,000 purse.

"We have made a concerted effort with local breeders and reached out to several out of state people in an attempt to significantly upgrade the quality of our sale," Charlotte Stemmans Clavier, president of Stemmans, Inc., said in a release. "This year's catalog will once again feature predominately accredited Louisiana-bred horses but also includes promising youngsters from sires such as Stormy Atlantic , Big Brown , El Corredor, and Montbrook as well as a colt from the recently pensioned Holy Bull."

"We don't have any million-dollar youngsters but a solid group of attractive racing prospects in the mid-level range that we feel should appeal to both the local horsemen and to those from other racing jurisdictions."

At last year's sale, 124 horses grossed $1,125,700, an average of $9,078.

"Those numbers (in 2012) were up significantly from 2011 and with what we feel is a more streamlined and attractive catalog for buyers to choose from along with an improving economy both locally and nationally we are optimistic of surpassing those numbers," Clavier said.
