Gomez On Flashback in Santa Anita Derby

Julien Leparoux had been riding the grade II-winning 3-year-old for Bob Baffert.

Agent Tony Matos confirmed March 14 that Garrett Gomez has picked up the mount on Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) winner Flashback  for the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) April 6.

Gomez replaces Julien Leparoux, who finished second on Flashback in the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) March 9 at Santa Anita Park. The even-money favorite suffered his first defeat in three races after prompting fast fractions on the front end in the 1 1/16-mile race.

"We're very excited that Bob Baffert put Garrett on this horse," Matos said in a Santa Anita release. "They've had a lot of success together and we hope it continues."

Gomez, a two-time Eclipse Award winner as outstanding jockey, finished sixth in the 2010 Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on the Baffert-trained Lookin At Lucky .
