Salzmans All Over First 2-Year-Old Race in MD

Father and sons are 11-for-13 in the first 2-year-old race of year in Maryland.

The Salzman family will attempt to pad its gaudy record when the first 2-year-old race of 2013 in Maryland is held at Laurel Park closing day, March 30.

A field of eight, including an entry, was entered in the $38,000 maiden special weight test at 4 1/2 furlongs. It's the first race on a program that begins at 12:35 p.m. EDT.

Maryland Jockey Club officials reported that in 11 of the past 13 years, trainers John Salzman Sr., John Salzman Jr., or Tim Salzman saddled the winner of the first 2-year-old race of the season. John Salzman Jr. has won the race the past four years, the MJC said.

Salzman Jr. will attempt to extend his streak with 5-2 morning-line favorite Take Time to Pray, a Florida-bred Songandaprayer colt. The trainer co-owns the colt with Danny Divver and Fred Wasserloos. Salzman Jr. has also entered Crowned Warrior, who will go at 9-2 on the morning line.

Salzman Sr. has entered a two-filly entry for owner Kenneth Taylor and partners: New Zone, a Kentucky-bred by Wilko, and Searchparty Dolly, a New York-bred by Posse. The entry is the 7-2 second choice on the morning line.

There is no stakes on the closing day card at Laurel. Pimlico Race Course opens April 4.
