GI Winner Music Merci Euthanized

Millionaire son of Stop the Music suffered from the infirmities of old age.

Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) winner Music Merci was euthanized because of the infirmities of old age at United Pegasus Foundation near Tehachapi, Calif. The son of Stop the Music was 27.

On the track, Music Merci compiled a record of 12-7-4 from 35 starts and earnings of $1,500,701. Owned by Pendleton and Sanford, the gray gelding scored in eight stakes, six of which were graded, including the 1988 Del Mar Futurity and a division of the Hoist the Flag Stakes (gr. II) at 2; the 1989 Illinois Derby, San Rafael, and Malibu (all gr. II) at 3; and the 1993 Palos Verdes (gr. III) at 7.

According to a release, Merci Music's retirement was sponsored by many racing fans the last several years.

"He will be greatly missed," the United Pegasus Foundation said in a release. "Music was a favorite of the staff and visitors and was also a favorite during UPF tours on Thursdays. He was laid to rest next to his racing buddy and pasture pal Cardmania."

Bred in Ontario, Canada by George Strawbridge Jr., Music Merci is out of the Jacinto mare Merci Croquet.
