Speakers Announced for Seminar on EIPH

The event will be held at the Keeneland sale pavilion April 9.

Among the speakers for an April 9 seminar on exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage are three trainers, officials announced.

The seminar, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. EDT at the Keeneland sale pavilion, is being held by the producer of FLAIR Nasal Strips and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. FLAIR co-inventor Dr. Jim Chiapetta will discuss use of the nasal strips as an alternative to race-day furosemide, also known as Salix or Lasix.

Chiapetta will be joined by Dr. Nathan Slovis, director of the McGee Medical Center at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington.

The trainers are Darrin Miller, Malcolm Pierce, and Jeff Thornbury, all of whom have horses stabled at Keeneland for the spring meet.

"This seminar will offer all stakeholders with equine health, medication, and safety concerns the opportunity to hear from well-known experts about the known mechanisms underlying EIPH, and scientifically supported, non-drug methods for reducing EIPH," Chiapetta said in a release.
